Raku Pottery with Peter Graham
£90 – per person (you must be over 16 years old)
Raku is a traditional 16th century pottery technique that has been used to create surfaces that are rich in character and full of variation. The word ‘Raku’ is often translated as happiness in the accident! That phrase captures the entire philosophy, as each piece is shaped by fire, smoke and chance, so no two outcomes ever match. This is due to the dramatic post firing reduction step that creates bold crackles, metallic flashes and smoke patterns.
On this workshop you have different techniques to try on three pots.
You will:
- learn about the process of Raku firing
- glaze 2 pots with different Raku glazes (crackle & coloured)
- decorate 1 pot using the Naked Raku technique
- participate in the Raku firings, including the addition of combustible materials
- learn about the cleaning of glazed pots & waxing of the naked Raku pots.
At the end of the Raku workshop, you will take home your 3 finished Raku pots!
All protective equipment is provided.
