Drawing and Painting Plants

An Introduction to Botanical Art

Session 1: A Focus on Flowers We will use sketching techniques to explore flower shapes: boxing, making 2D/3D generalisations and measuring points. We are looking for botanical accuracy. We will also learn the terminology of flower parts and try to identify these when dissecting flowers. We will draw from our cross sections.

Basic Equipment: Sketchbook with cartridge paper larger around A3 size, pencils 2H-HB, plastic eraser emery board.

Other useful equipment if you have it: Pencils 4H- 3B, magnifier (hand or on a stand).

Session 2: A Focus on Foliage We will use sketching techniques to explore leaf shapes: rubbings, tracing, exploring tone with pencils, leaf patterns on stems. We will also look at composition on the page/paper.

Basic Equipment: Sketchbook with cartridge paper larger around A3 size, pencils 2H-HB, plastic eraser emery board.

Other useful equipment if you have it: Pencils 4H- 3B, magnifier (hand or on a stand).

Session 3: A Focus on Colour We will discuss different techniques for creating a final painting. We will combine our drawing skills with the application of colour building up layers of colours. We will try to achieve transparency of petals. We will explore highlights and shadow colour. Using our knowledge of composition, drawing and painting from previous sessions we will work on a flower or plant painting. We will celebrate with a tabletop exhibition of best work and discuss next steps / courses /societies.

Basic Equipment: Sketchbook with cartridge paper larger around A3 size, pencils 2H-HB, plastic eraser emery board, Smooth watercolour paper hot pressed 300mg, fine paintbrushes sizes 000, 00 or 0 and 1, 2, 3, 4, watercolour paints or pencil crayons if you prefer, white putty rubber( Windsor and Newton).

Other useful equipment if you have it: Pencils 4H- 3B, magnifier (hand-held or on a stand), artists quality watercolours, sable watercolour brushes, drawing board, table easel.
